Which airport should I fly into?
Fly to the Spokane International Airport. Most major airlines service this airport.
How do I get to campus from the airport?
The GDI does not offer shuttle service from the airport. However, there are number of inexpensive options for travelling to campus. Visit the airport ground transportation page for more information on shuttle and cab options. Uber and Lyft also service the airport.
How do I get to the airport on my departure day?
The GDI will arrange a charter bus service to shuttle students to the airport on the scheduled departure day. You will have the opportunity to sign up for that bus at registration. The cost is $5. The buses generally depart at 7:30am and again at 8:30am.
When and where do I check in?
You can begin checking into the dorm any time after 8am on the day your program is scheduled to begin. Registration will be from 3pm to 5pm. Your orientation meeting will be at 7pm followed by your first lab meeting. If you will be arriving late please send us an email with your approximate arrival time. Please make every attempt to plan your travel so you can attend the 7pm meeting.
What should I expect with the meal plan?
Certainly not the home-cooking you might be used to, but it is pretty standard college dining hall food. Most meals are served in the GU dining facilities although we do cater from campus a couple times per week. These meals are “all you can eat”. Meal times will be explained at orientation. Your meal plan begins with dinner on the night you arrive and ends with dinner the night before your departure. If you have any dietary restrictions please note those on your application in the appropriate space as well as on your medical form.
Can I request a specific partner and/or roommate?
Yes. There is a space on the application for you to make those requests.
What if my regular partner is not attending GDI?
Well then they are clearly missing out! But not to worry, lots of students attend without their partner and your lab leader will work with the students to create the appropriate partnerships in labs.
Who is teaching at the GDI this year?
Some of the best debate minds in the country! Check out our faculty page for the current list of confirmed faculty.
Can I request a specific lab leader?
Sort of. If the lab leader you requested is working in the program you selected we will make every attempt to honor your request. If you want to work with someone specific you need to apply for that program.
If I want to room someone from another program is that allowed?
Generally yes, but only if those programs are the same length of time (i.e. 5, 4, or 2 weeks).
When is final payment due?
6, 5, and 4 week programs final payments are due on June 1st. 2 week program final payments are due July 1st.
Does the dorms provide linens?
No. You will need to bring your own linens/blanket/pillow. You can also purchase those while you are here if needed. Before camp begins we will give you the option of pre-ordering a blanket which you can pay for once you arrive.
Should I bring a fan?
We would strongly encourage students to bring fans for their dorm rooms. While most of the time the weather is moderate during GDI there will be some days when it gets hot and you will greatly benefit from having a fan. Before camp begins we will give you the option of pre-ordering a fan which you can pay for once you arrive. If you are a returning GDI alumni and purchased a fan last summer and asked us to store it we will make sure to get that back to you.
What else should I bring?
We’ll include a more detailed list in your orientation packet, but you’ll need the basics: towel, washcloth, shower shoes (flip flops, etc), toiletries such as deodorant/toothpaste, debate supplies (your laptop, charger, pens, something to write on unless you take all notes on your computer). And certainly we hope you’ll bring a good attitude!
Are there laundry facilities?
Yes, the dorms have free washers/dryers. You will need to bring your own detergent.
Are there kitchen facilities?
Yes. Each floor of the dorm has its own full kitchen. Students are welcome to use the kitchen as long as they keep it clean and safe.
Is there any additional paperwork I need to submit?
Your orientation packet will include required documents that we need returned before or at registration.
